A Gift for my Husband

At the end of the month the kids have spring break and we are actually taking a trip for a whole week.  This is a big deal as we have not gone any way more then a couple nights anywhere in 2 years.  I was talking about getting a couple duffel bags for the trip so we will be able to get everything in the minivan as we are going with my husbands brother and his wife.  We have big suitcases but they are big for international travel not for car travel.
My husband is happy to use a plastic grocery bag, I am not.  What is it with men and plastic bags, I don't get it.  So my husbands birthday is a few weeks away and I decided to make him a duffel bag. I have only ever made a few purses last year and the thought of making a duffel bag was a bit scary.  Not sure why as it really was not as bad to put together as I thought it would be.

I used a Simplicity Patterns that I picked up on sale at Joann Fabrics in February, on there 5 for $5 sale.  Such a HUGE bargain.  I picked up the pattern #2274, which is designed by Studio Cherie.  I already have plans to make one for each of us but it won't happen by the trip I am sure.

I am so happy with how it turned out.

The fabric is from Joann's with the exception of the red which is Robert Kaufman Quilter's Linen. To give it some shape I used two layers of warm and natural and quilted straight lines down and across the bag.  The pattern called for jute webbing for the handles but I just made my own handles with a layer of batting in between to give some structure.

Can't wait to see if my husband likes it.

Thanks for stopping by.
